Last Sunday, I decided that I really am going to do NaNo this year. That's right, last Sunday the 11th. Okay, I'm nuts. But here's my thinking... I've had this story rolling around in my head since August. Characters who'd show up in my dreams, settings, ideas. I'd been taking notes. And I'm laid off. And Sunday morning I just *had* to write.

I'm over 5,000 words now, which I know is behind a lot of leaders. But it's also more than I got done the first time I did NaNo.

Yes, I'm posting alot, but I'm hoping this will help not only myself, but maybe someone else as well, to stay motivated. So, every so often, I'll try to post an inspirational or motivational quote for writers. Please feel free to post a few, too, and don't forget to post your word counts so we can encourage one another.

Ok, here's the first quote, which was selected because it is ridiculously appropriate for NaNoWriMos:

"There are times when quantity is at least as important as quality in learning an art."
Lawrence Watt-Evans

Keep going!

If you go, what do you like/dislike about them? Do you feel you get alot of help or alot of work done while you're there? What are your strategies for success in terms of getting some words out while attending? Is it more for socializing and destressing with other people as insane as you are?

If you don't go, why? If you write primarily at home/alone, how do you stay focused and motivated? Hints? Tips? Cheats? lol

This is my first year and I'll take any advice y'all wanna give!

NaNoWriMo Virgin in Columbia, MD

Hi, I am in Columbia, MD, and I don't know a soul who will take part in this with me. Looks like I am the only person I know crazy enough to attempt. Is there anywhere any of you recommend to look up other contest participants in your region for NaNoWriMo?

I just bought the book, "No Plot? No Problem." by Chris Baty and am reading that hurriedly for any tips I can glean, since I only discovered NaNoWriMo for myself a couple of months ago.

But, eek, I don't even have the beginning of an idea, a genre, or anything.

Does anyone have any tips on how to begin? Do you always come w/inspiration and a well-defined idea, or have some of you just wrote the first thing that came to mind?

Well the site is opened for signups and all the pre-november warmups, foruming, etc etc etc. Too bad so far the site is running extremely slow. So I popped over here to check on the community, looks like this place has been abandoned since the end of last year's event. Hopefully the main site gets sped up soon so there's a place for the nanowrimo community to start getting all abuzz.

Day 13 - So how did the weekend treat everyone?

I am doing ok, although I didn't make my personal goal of 30k by Sunday bedtime.
One problem was that I thought I was about 2k further ahead than I thought - math is not my friend.

On the upside, Sunday I got into a great groove and cranked out 6k in about 2 hours!

I'm sitting just shy of 29k right now and still have lots to say so week two isn't NEARLY as painful as it was last year!

Anyone else wanna talk about their weekend's efforts?

Plot Helping Tool!

Not sure if anybody has seen this, but I just ran accross it:

http://www.storybase.net/story.php?catid=6

It's a tool on some site StoryBase.net. It's got a whole database of plot ideas, based on different characteristics of your character or storyline! I entered my character names ,and then chose a personality type for my main character, and it brought up a bunch of actually neat ideas for story direction.

Kinda neat. I don't think I have to use it quite yet, but it's good to know that it's there if I find myself running out of steam.

Thought I'd share :)

Hope you're all having good word-count luck!

popular San Francisco cafes for nano's?

Hi

I'm curious if people writing are hanging out in any particular SF cafes. I've been wandering around and am at about 18.5K words. I wrote 18K of them in the first 10 days and have been stagnant...now am changing the plot trying to figure out how to weave what I wrote into the new characters. Ack.

Just thought I'd "emote" here to avoid writing.

Also if you happen to own a cafe I have a typewriter I want to donate so people can come in and start typing a novel!

So, how did the weekend treat everyone?

At just over 12k end of day Sunday I'm ahead of the nano posted schedule, but behind my own goals...
I'd like to be at 15k end of day today but not sure if that will work... had to miss my lunchtime write-in for a meeting and computer problems so I've counting on writing tonight.

Has anybody found an online forum, like some sort of blogging tools or sites, that would work for uploading each day's work as we go?

It'd have to be able to post "backwards" from the common "most recent on top" style. Just thinking i'd be cool to have a place where people could go each day to see the latest work!

(straight off the website...)

We want you to write a movie.

Yep. We love writing novels in November. And we'll keep running NaNoWriMo until the sun implodes. But after seven years, we're eager for a supplemental adventure. One where we can get in over our heads and swim out past the creative breakwaters and experience the exhilarating surge of a thousand other nautical metaphors cascading over our laptops and legal pads in a froth of art-fueling adrenaline.

Also, we want to do it because it turns out that movie stars don't flock to amateur novelists in quite the quantities we'd hoped.

So we're heading into the world of screenplays. And we're currently laying the foundations for a new website that will provide inspiration, community, and a terrifying, month-long deadline for would-be screenwriters around the globe.

Like NaNoWriMo, the event will be free, fun, and self-competitive. Unlike NaNoWriMo, collaboration will be encouraged. Also, the whole thing will be helmed by someone much smarter and more experienced than me---a fantastic writer and UCLA-trained director named Kristina Malsberger.

Kristina is awesome, and you'll be hearing more from her when the temporary site for the screenplay event launches this fall. If you'd like to make sure you get a heads-up about the escapade, you can add your email address to our NaNoRemindMe box on the NaNoWriMo home page, and we'll send you an email when the new site goes up.

Looking for some folks who've done it before (completed or not) to talk about their experiences.

Not trying to make a workshop, just a social group that will help with mutual exertion of pressure to get it done.

Just wanted to say hi. This year will be my first NaNoWriMo, and my final plunge into my longtime dreamed about world of writing. I am so jazzed I am bout to burst. I've been boning up on sills by bashing out some short stories and readin a bunch of "how-to" books, including "No Plot? No Problem!" Most recently I am on "Plot & Structure" by Jason Scott Bell. Fantastic book, for me anyways.

I look forward to posting here often, with laments and triumphs, in November!!

The NaNoWriMo website won't let you sign up untill October 1. This has been driving me crazy because the people who've participated in previous years are chatting in the forums and I can't join in.

Anyone know a way around that? Do I need to write them and whine about it? Do I just wait?

During the last several years I worked on a novel, and kept extensive notes about my project. If you're interested in how someone comes up with the idea for a book, researches it, and writes and revises it, you might be interested in reading my notes. The notes are in the form of a PDF file you can download.

Final week, how's everyone holding up?

I've entered the final week with 25,000 words complete, and thus 25,000 words to go. Hehe, yeah, it's been a november of procrastination and disctraction for me, but I'm far from giving up. I've already knocked out another 3500 words today and it isn't even 2pm. I'll have to write every day this week to get to the finish, but, it can be done.

So how are you guys doing? Done already, so close that you're just languidly tapping the keys? Sweating and pushing forth? Or so far beind you've given up on this year?

Well, that was fun and exciting. I spent 95% of the month thinking I'd never make it, but finished up at about 10pm last night. It's a good feeling.

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Congrats to everyone, whether you made it or not, who gave it a whirl this year. Hope to see you all back next year!

I'm finding I get a bit more elaborate with the planning every year. It helps to have a wealth of brainstorming material available when I finally start writing.

What'll be on your playlist as you pound out your 50,000 words? Or is silence your preferred ear candy? I'll probably alternate between whooshy ambient new age stuff (jellyfish rock) and industrial/techno. Scoff all you like, but Moby's helped me put together more than a few pages of prose!

If you can't wait until November, or if you'd just like to try a different format, the great minds at LitKicks are launching The QUEST. It's also devoted to spontaneous writing, but features a workshop-like setup (small critique groups) and shorter assignments (rather than an entire novel). Check it out. If it wasn't so close to NaNoWriMo, I'd consider it.

Anyone interested in a 4-week workshop session? I'm able to grant a "scholarship" this next one. My website is down for the moment but I set up a temporary blog, where you can get all the details. http://bellascribe.blogdrive.com. This is really late notice; deadline's right around the corner (lots of stuff's been in my way) so if you're interested you'll want to check it out pretty quickly.

All are invited to sign up and follow along as I either 1) reach my goal, or 2) fall flat on my face. :{)
